Journal Article Development
Turn a thesis chapter or completed study into an article with one clear contribution, the right structure for your field, and authorship settled before submission.
Free. Works on Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or any assistant that accepts a skill file.
What this skill does
The method, encoded.
Papers are rejected far more often for having no clear contribution than for having weak data. The usual cause is a thesis chapter lightly edited into article form. A chapter can defer, assume earlier chapters, and survey exhaustively because an examiner is checking coverage. An article can do none of that: it is read once, by a reviewer who owes it nothing, and it must be self-contained and single-minded.
This skill runs the transformation. It extracts every claim the work could support, tests each against three questions (is it true, is it new, would anyone in the field care), and reduces them to one contribution sentence that the whole paper then serves. Everything that does not serve it goes to a cut file, which is usually where the second paper comes from.
From there it rebuilds the architecture to the conventions of your own field rather than a generic template, writes an introduction that lands the claim instead of deferring it, turns a literature survey into a literature argument, holds the line between results and interpretation, and reports methods to the standard the field requires. It settles authorship against explicit criteria before submission rather than during it, writes the title and abstract with the attention they actually deserve, and ends with an honest verdict on whether the paper is ready.
It never writes the manuscript for you. It interrogates, structures, critiques and teaches.
Best used for
- Turning a thesis chapter into a standalone article
- Diagnosing a paper rejected for having no clear contribution
- Cutting an over-long manuscript without losing the argument
- Deciding whether a body of work is one paper or two
- Settling authorship and contributorship before it becomes a dispute
- Writing a title and abstract that represent the paper accurately
- Judging honestly whether the work is publishable yet
Typical inputs
What you give it.
Completed research with analysis finished, Thesis chapter or existing manuscript draft, The author's current statement of what the work contributes, Field or subfield, and its article conventions, Optional target venue and its author guidelines, Optional applicable reporting guideline for the study design, Optional exemplar articles from the target area, List of everyone who worked on the study and what each did
Typical outputs
What you get back.
Single-sentence contribution claim, with rejected candidates recorded, Gap statement locating the claim against the works that define the boundary, Section-level architecture plan matched to the field's conventions, Cut list separating future-paper material from material that does not earn its place, Manuscript with results and interpretation cleanly separated, Reporting completeness check against the applicable field standard, Authorship list, order, and per-person contribution statement, Title and abstract written from the finished paper, Publication-readiness verdict with a work list where negative
Method coverage
What the skill works through.
- Why a thesis chapter is not an article
- Finding the one contribution the paper makes
- Testing a claim: is it true, is it new, does anyone care
- Cutting what does not serve the claim
- Article architecture, and how much it varies by field
- Writing an introduction that states the contribution
- Making a literature section argue rather than survey
- Reporting methods to the standard your field requires
- Keeping interpretation out of the results
- Writing limitations that are specific and consequential
- The title and abstract, written last and usually written worst
- Authorship criteria and the disputes that follow from ignoring them
- Deciding whether the paper is publishable yet
- Declaring AI assistance in manuscript preparation

Common questions.
How do I turn a thesis chapter into a journal article?
Not by shortening it. Start by identifying the single claim the paper makes, then rebuild the structure around that claim and cut everything that does not serve it, which in a thesis chapter is typically between a third and two thirds of the content. A chapter serves a larger document and can assume what came before; an article must stand alone and make one point.
What counts as a contribution in a research paper?
It varies by field. Empirical novelty, theoretical development, a methodological advance, a replication, a synthesis and a well-powered null result are all contributions somewhere and not everywhere. The workable test in any field: state it as a full sentence with a subject and a verb, then ask whether it is true given your evidence, new relative to the published literature, and something a competent person in your field would care about.
How long should a journal article introduction be?
In most empirical fields, a handful of paragraphs that do four jobs: establish the problem, say what is known, say where knowledge stops, and say what this paper does about it. The two common failures are a funnel that narrows for three pages without landing, and deferring the contribution claim to the discussion. A reviewer decides what kind of paper this is in the first page.
Who should be listed as an author on a paper?
Criteria differ in wording between fields and publishers but converge: a substantial intellectual contribution, involvement in drafting or critically revising, approval of the submitted version, and accountability for the work. All of them, not one. Funding, providing access or data, and general supervision are normally acknowledged rather than authored. Agree the list and the order in writing early, because disputes almost always trace to an assumption nobody stated.
Can I use AI to write my journal article?
Not to produce text you submit as your own unaided writing. Check your institution's policy and the venue's, because many publishers now require disclosure of AI use in manuscript preparation, and most prohibit it entirely in peer review. AI is genuinely useful for interrogating your contribution claim, testing structure, finding what is missing, and critiquing your own drafts. It should never supply citations, results or numbers.
Why do reviewers say my paper has no clear contribution?
Usually one of three things: the paper contains two contributions competing for the same introduction, the claim is stated only in the discussion, or the claim is a topic ("this study contributes to understanding of X") rather than an assertion about the world. Rewriting the introduction rarely fixes it, because the structure underneath was built for a different claim.
How do I cut a paper that is over the word limit?
Cut by function, not by proportion. For each element, ask what would need rewriting if it were removed; anything that answers "nothing" is not serving the argument. In thesis-derived papers the largest cuttable category is material present to demonstrate competence: methodological throat-clearing, positioning that does not change what was done, and literature surveyed for coverage.
Should I write the abstract first or last?
Last, from the finished paper rather than from the plan, and then check every claim and number in it against the section it summarises. The abstract and title are the most-read and least-invested parts of any paper. The commonest failure is an abstract that ends with "findings are discussed" instead of saying what was found.
Is it better to submit and see what reviewers say?
Rarely. Assess four things first: is the contribution real, is it supported by an unbroken chain back to the method, is every element a reviewer will look for present, and does the paper answer the obvious objections. A premature submission costs several months and, at some venues, costs you that venue.
