Research Report Writing
Write research prose that is precise about what was measured and still readable, with quotes that evidence, numbers that land, and no machine-prose tells.
Free. Works on Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or any assistant that accepts a skill file.
What this skill does
The method, encoded.
Research writing has a permanent problem: precision and readability pull against each other, and neither can be given up. Every qualification that makes a claim defensible (the base, the population, the period, the uncertainty) makes the sentence harder to read. Every simplification that makes it land removes something that made it true.
Most writers resolve this by picking a side. Picking precision produces the report nobody finishes. Picking readability produces the report that says more than the study did, with the caveats migrated to the appendix and the associations quietly promoted to drivers. The professional resolution is neither: it is a set of techniques for placing precision where it does not block the sentence.
This skill is those techniques. The paragraph as a unit of argument. How to write a finding sentence that carries base, population and period in a few words. How to put a number in a sentence so it is legible, and a quote so it evidences rather than decorates. How to mark interpretation consistently so a reader always knows when reporting became arguing. How to write about uncertainty without becoming unreadable. And a final pass that detects and removes the signature of AI-generated research prose: uniform paragraph length, tricolon structures, hollow transitions, restatement disguised as synthesis, and the confident summary of a weak finding.
Best used for
- Drafting findings chapters from an evidenced structure
- Rewriting a section that is accurate but unreadable
- Bringing several authors into one register without changing claims
- Writing about genuinely uncertain findings without collapsing into hedge
- Removing the signature of machine-generated prose from a draft
- Chapters resting on qualitative material where quotes are doing the arguing
Typical inputs
What you give it.
Section plan stating what each section establishes, Findings as claims with source references, bases and confidence levels, Conventions register covering terminology, bases, rounding and confidence words, Verified quote set with participant identifiers and segments, Narrative statement or report spine, Audience definition and their working vocabulary, Previous report for the same client, Full transcripts behind the selected quotes
Typical outputs
What you get back.
Written report chapters and sections, Paragraphs structured as claim, evidence, qualification, consequence, Finding sentences carrying base, population and period, Quotes integrated with participant reference, segment and prevalence, Interpretation marked with consistent signal words, Uncertainty written readably with alternatives and validation named, Section openings and closings that carry the argument, Register note fixing person, tense, terminology and confidence vocabulary, A draft with AI prose tells detected and removed

Common questions.
How do I write up research findings clearly?
Build each paragraph as a unit of argument: claim, evidence with its reference, qualification, consequence. Put the claim first, always. The commonest defect in research prose is the inductive paragraph that walks the reader through the numbers and reveals the point at the end, which reads as suspense to the writer and as fog to the reader. Then keep specificity out of the clause and in a short reference next to it, so the sentence carries the claim and the reference carries the machinery.
How do I include statistics in a report without making it unreadable?
One load-bearing number per sentence, and the rest into a reference or a chart. Numbers stop being read at about three per sentence. Round to the precision the method supports, so whole percentages unless there is a reason. Keep a comparison and its comparator in the same sentence. Never let a percentage appear without its base: if the sentence cannot carry it, the reference must, because a percentage that has lost its base has become an opinion.
How should quotes be used in a research report?
Use the pattern claim, quote, significance. The prose makes the claim, the quote provides the instance, and a short sentence says what to notice, because a quote left alone gets read in whatever way the reader was already inclined to. A quote earns its place by showing something the prose cannot: a mechanism, a framing, a word the participant chose that you would not have. If it restates the sentence above it, it is decoration, and it is occupying space a second piece of evidence needed. Always carry the participant identifier, the segment, and the prevalence when a theme is being claimed.
How do I write about uncertain findings without hedging everything?
Hedge differentially. If every claim in a chapter is qualified, the reader cannot find the strong ones and discounts them all equally, which is a calibration failure just as much as overstatement. Four techniques, in order of preference: state the finding and its limit in two sentences rather than one qualified sentence; quantify the uncertainty as a range where it is quantifiable; name the specific alternative explanation rather than gesturing at caution; and say what would settle it, which turns a limitation into a next step.
How can I tell if writing was generated by AI?
Five reliable tells in research prose. Uniform paragraph length, where every paragraph is three or four sentences regardless of what it carries. Three-part lists in sentence after sentence, where the third item is usually invented to complete the pattern. Hollow transitional sentences that assert a relationship without naming one. Paragraphs beginning "taken together, these findings suggest" that then restate the findings and add nothing. And the confident summary of a weak finding, where a small-base result is written in the same declarative register as the strong ones.
What is the difference between academic hedging and good qualification?
Good qualification carries information about how firm a claim is. Academic hedging attaches the same modal verbs to everything, so it carries none. "It may tentatively be suggested that there is some indication that respondents could be experiencing difficulty" has four hedges on one claim and tells the reader nothing about its strength. The opposite failure, consultancy inflation, uses emphatic and unfalsifiable language. The professional register is declarative by default, hedged where the evidence is genuinely uncertain, and hedged differently at different confidence levels.
How do I make a report written by several people read as one?
Mechanically rather than stylistically. Fix one term per concept, one base convention, one rounding rule, one set of confidence words, one signal word per interpretive level, and one level of abstraction per section, and write them down before drafting. Then edit in two separate passes: a claims pass that marks anything unsupported or over-hedged, and a language pass on the marked sentences only. Rewriting whole paragraphs for style is how a report acquires claims nobody made and loses references nobody noticed.
Where do I mark the difference between what the data shows and what I think it means?
In the signal words, used consistently and exclusively. "Shows" is reserved for what the data shows. "Suggests" always means moderate confidence. "What appears to be happening" marks an insight rather than a finding. The rule that catches most errors is that a finding and an interpretation never share a sentence without a signal word between them. "Satisfaction fell because the fee changed" hides the join; "Satisfaction fell 11 points. The timing points to the fee change as the most likely explanation, though this design cannot separate it from the seasonal pattern" shows it.
How long should a section of a research report be?
As long as its evidence, which means sections should be visibly uneven. A finding on a base of 40 gets one sentence with its base and a directional reading, not three paragraphs of interpretation. A section with two findings is two paragraphs and a closing. The tell that this discipline has failed is a report whose section lengths are stable while the evidence behind them varies, which is padding, and padding is where unsupported connective prose lives.
What is the difference between report writing and report compilation?
Compilation assembles heterogeneous evidence into a structure: it owns the source inventory, the evidence map and the conventions that hold across sections, and it is the right skill when inputs come from several methods, several files or several people. Writing is the prose produced inside that structure. A single-source report from one clean analysis by one analyst can go straight to writing, because the compilation overheads earn nothing there.
