What this skill does
The method, encoded.
Research projects overrun for reasons that were knowable in advance. Timelines are built forwards from today, so they always fit. They are built out of activities rather than deliverables, so "working on the literature review" absorbs four months and produces nothing anyone can inspect. And they omit the same dependencies every time, because those dependencies belong to other people: ethics committees, gatekeepers, data controllers, transcription, and the supervisor's own reading time.
This skill builds the plan backwards from the binding deadline, converts calendar months into actual working weeks, forces every milestone to be an artefact a third party could verify on the date, and puts the underestimated dependencies into a register with elapsed times and fallbacks. It then supplies the monitoring side: the four early signals of a stalling student, the three kinds of block that need three different interventions, a scope conversation structured around core, supporting and additional components, recovery planning that changes a condition rather than moving a date, and the honest deliverability conversation while options still exist.
Decisions about progression, extension and continuation stay with the academic and the institution.

Why should a research timeline be built backwards?
Because a forward plan always fits. Tasks expand into the space available and the last one simply lands wherever it lands. Starting at the deadline and moving left, with final production and submission placed first, makes the shortage of time visible now rather than at the end, which is the only point at which anything can be done about it.
What dependencies do research plans usually leave out?
The ones controlled by other people. Ethics approval, including the committee's meeting cycle and at least one revision round. Recruitment, which runs slowest at the start. Data access approvals and secure environment onboarding. Transcription and data preparation. The supervisor's own reading turnaround, multiplied by the number of drafts. And the final block of formatting, proofreading, references and the institution's submission process.
What counts as a milestone?
An artefact that exists or does not exist, on a date, that someone other than the student can inspect. "Working on the literature review" is an activity and can absorb any amount of time. "A 5,000-word literature chapter with a stated organising argument, sent to the supervisor" is a milestone, because its absence is unmistakable.
What are the early signs that a student is stalling?
Avoidance of contact; scope that keeps expanding; perfectionist rewriting of an early chapter; and the disappearance of specific questions. The last is the most reliable and the least noticed: engaged students ask narrow, technical, answerable questions, and when the questions become general or stop, engagement with the actual problem has usually stopped too.
A student is stuck. What kind of intervention do they need?
It depends which of three blocks they have. A technical skill block stops work at a nameable operation and is resolved quickly with training or a specialist session. A decision block shows as circling and more reading, and is resolved by forcing the choice to a date with the options and consequences written down. A confidence or motivation block shows as avoidance and perfectionist rewriting, and needs the next step made small enough to complete. Ask what they would do if they sat down tomorrow: the answer separates the three.
When should scope be cut?
Earlier than it feels necessary. Scope reduction is the most common supervisory intervention and the one most often left too late. List every component, mark each core, supporting or additional, cost each in working weeks, and cut from the bottom until the plan fits. A smaller completed thesis passes and a larger incomplete one does not, and the cut material is usually the next paper.
A milestone was missed. What now?
Do not simply move it, because the conditions that caused the miss are unchanged. Establish factually what happened, re-baseline the remaining plan against the unchanged deadline, change one condition (scope, supervision contact, a resolved block, a smaller next step), and set a checkpoint within two to three weeks rather than waiting for the next scheduled meeting.
Can an AI system decide whether a student should progress or get an extension?
No. Progression, extension and continuation decisions belong to the named academic and the institution, with their own criteria and rights of appeal. This skill produces the arithmetic, the options the regulations offer and the evidence record. It also never assesses a student's circumstances, health or motivation, and where a difficulty may be non-academic, the route is institutional support, not a schedule.
