Theoretical and Conceptual Framework Development

Choose a theoretical lens with a real justification, then build a framework whose constructs are defined and whose arrows actually claim something.

Free. Works on Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or any assistant that accepts a skill file.

What this skill does

The method, encoded.

Framework chapters fail in a small number of predictable ways. The four terms get conflated, so a study claims a theoretical framework and shows a diagram of variables. A theory is adopted because it turned up in the first papers read, with no account of what was rejected. Constructs are named but never defined, so the same word means different things in chapters two, three and five. Relationships are drawn as arrows that state no direction, sign or condition, which makes the diagram impossible to disagree with and therefore useless. And once drawn, the framework is never used again.

This skill fixes each of those explicitly. It defines the four terms, establishes whether your study is testing a theory, using one to look, or building one, and compares candidate lenses on four questions, including the one that separates a lens from a label: what would this theory find surprising? It then defines constructs twice, converts every arrow into a numbered proposition, works down the ladder from construct to indicator with the gap stated, and builds a traceability matrix connecting research questions to constructs, measurement and analysis.

It also handles the two cases most guidance ignores: using a framework in qualitative research without turning it into a coding straitjacket, and what belongs in this chapter when the study generates theory rather than testing it.

Best used for

  • Writing a defensible framework chapter
  • Choosing between competing theoretical lenses
  • Turning a literature review into a framework rather than a summary
  • Operationalising constructs before instrument design
  • Using a framework in qualitative work without prescribing the analysis
  • Handling theory-generating designs where the usual advice does not apply

Typical inputs

What you give it.

Research questions or objectives in current wording, Literature the student has actually read, with sources, The study's design intent (quantitative, qualitative or mixed; confirmatory or exploratory), Departmental definitions of the required framework sections, Candidate theories suggested by a supervisor or found in the literature

Typical outputs

What you get back.

Definitions of theory, theoretical framework, conceptual framework and model, A candidate lens comparison table on four interrogation questions, A comparative justification naming the alternatives set aside, A construct table with conceptual and study definitions and levels of analysis, Numbered propositions specifying direction, sign, form and conditionality, An operationalisation table with construct-to-indicator gap statements, A one-page keyed framework diagram numbered to the propositions, A research question to construct to measurement traceability matrix, A stated framework boundary of application

Method coverage

What the skill works through.

  1. Theory, theoretical framework, conceptual framework and model: the four terms
  2. Is your study testing theory, using theory, or building it
  3. Finding the candidate lenses in the literature you have read
  4. Four questions that select a theory for you
  5. Writing the justification as an argument against alternatives
  6. Defining every construct twice
  7. Turning arrows into propositions, and deleting the rest
  8. From construct to indicator, and the gap between them
  9. The traceability matrix that ties the framework to the study
  10. What makes a framework diagram meaningful rather than decorative
  11. Using a framework in qualitative work without prescribing the findings
  12. What the framework section contains in a theory-generating study

Questions

Common questions.

What is the difference between a theoretical framework and a conceptual framework?

A theoretical framework is your study's use of existing theory: which theory, why that one rather than the alternatives, and what it directs you to look at. A conceptual framework is the structure of your particular study: the constructs involved, how they are defined here, and the relationships proposed between them, whether or not they come from a single theory. Departments use the terms inconsistently, so define both in your own words and use them consistently.

How do I justify choosing one theory over another?

Comparatively and specifically. Name at least two alternatives from the literature and give a concrete reason each was set aside: wrong level of analysis, boundary conditions that exclude your context, explains a different part of the phenomenon, or cannot be observed with the data you can obtain. "It was the most appropriate" is not a justification, and it is the answer that gets pursued in a viva.

What makes a framework diagram meaningful rather than decorative?

Every box is a construct that appears in your construct table, every arrow corresponds to a numbered proposition the reader can look up, the notation is explained in a key, and the diagram would change if your claims changed. The practical test: if you can delete an element without altering any proposition, that element is ornamental.

How do I operationalise a construct?

Work down from construct to dimensions to indicators to the actual items or observable events, then write one sentence on what the indicator captures well and one on what it misses. An indicator is never the construct: logins are not engagement, an exam mark is not learning. Where the field has validated instruments, prefer them, because comparability with prior work usually beats a bespoke item set.

Can I use a conceptual framework in a qualitative study?

Yes, if you use it as a set of sensitising concepts that orient attention rather than as a code frame applied at first pass. Code inductively at least once, keep both the inductive codes and their mapping to the framework, and report the material that did not fit. That residual is usually where the contribution is.

What if my study generates theory rather than testing it?

The chapter still exists, with different content: your orienting theoretical position, the sensitising concepts and the reason for each, an explicit statement of what has deliberately not been pre-specified and why the design requires that, and how the emergent account will be judged adequate. The framework diagram then appears near the end as an output, and you say so early so a marker does not read it as an omission.
